Fractional Marketing Director

Senior marketing leadership, a few days a month

You get the direction, judgement and accountability of a marketing director without carrying the salary of one.

Someone to own the plan.

Sarah Ward, fractional marketing director for UK SMEs

When this is the right answer

Plenty of SMEs have capable marketing people and still drift. The work gets done, but nobody is deciding what matters, challenging the agency, or connecting marketing to the commercial numbers.

As your fractional director I hold that space. I set the direction, run the plan, manage the people or partners doing the work, and give you a straight answer at board level about what marketing is delivering.

It usually starts at one to four days a month on a rolling arrangement, so you can scale it up around a launch and back down when things settle.

From £500 per day

Strategic lead days, from one day a month up to around five. Three is typical.

What I take on

  • Direction and priorities

One plan, agreed with you, that everything else is measured against.

  • Team leadership and mentoring

Support for your marketing executive or manager so they grow rather than just cope.

  • Agency and supplier management

Briefing, challenging and reviewing the people you pay, so you get value from them.

  • Budget ownership

A budget that maps to the plan, with sensible calls about what to stop funding.

  • Reporting that answers the question

A short monthly view of what happened, what it cost and what we are changing.

  • Board and sales alignment

Making sure marketing is pulling in the same direction as the people who close the work.
