Marketing support for Essex SMEs: how a freelance consultant works with local businesses

What it actually looks like to bring in senior marketing support as an Essex SME: how the work runs, when I come to you, and what a first engagement involves.

Most of the Essex businesses I speak to are in a similar position. There is marketing happening, someone capable is doing it, and nobody is quite sure whether it is working. Hiring a marketing director is too big a step, and an agency retainer feels like paying for activity before anyone has decided what the activity should be.

Bringing in a freelance consultant sits between the two. This is how that works in practice.

Who this tends to suit

It usually fits businesses where:

  • Marketing is handled by one busy person, or shared out across people who have other jobs
  • There is a website, some social activity and maybe an agency, but no plan holding it together
  • Nobody can say with confidence where enquiries are coming from
  • The leadership team wants senior marketing thinking without a senior salary

Where I work across Essex

I work with businesses across Essex and the surrounding area, including Chelmsford, Maldon, Colchester, Basildon, Thurrock, Braintree, Southend, Rayleigh, Clacton, Bishops Stortford and Saffron Walden, and remotely with businesses elsewhere in the UK.

Being local matters less than it used to for the day to day work, but it still helps for the parts that go better in person: a kick off session, interviewing the sales team, or a workshop where the whole leadership team needs to be in the room.

How the work runs

Remote-first, with on-site days when they add something. Most reviews, planning and reporting happen just as well on a call, which keeps the cost sensible and the pace up. When a session genuinely benefits from being face to face, I come to you.

You deal with me throughout. There is no account manager, no handover to someone more junior, and no separate team to brief.

The approach: discover, audit, plan, act

Every engagement follows the same arc, scaled to the size of the job:

  • Discover: understand the business, the commercial goals and how marketing is currently run
  • Audit: look at the evidence, the spend, the website, search visibility and where enquiries actually come from
  • Plan: agree a small number of priorities with numbers attached, in an order the business can actually deliver
  • Act: get it moving, whether that is me delivering, your team delivering, or directing the suppliers you already have

Typical engagements

Most work falls into one of three shapes:

  • A marketing audit, when you need evidence and a prioritised list before committing to spend
  • A marketing strategy, when the direction needs setting and writing down properly
  • Fractional support, usually two to four days a month, when the gap is ongoing leadership rather than a one off piece of work

Plenty of businesses start with an audit and move into ongoing support once the priorities are clear. Others take the plan and run it themselves, which is a perfectly good outcome.

What the work has looked like

The case studies on this site cover an audit that reshaped how an estate agency understood its buyers and sellers, social media programmes built from scratch for manufacturing and industrial businesses, a customer learning centre, and print work including an annual and an exhibitions brochure.

Different sectors, same method: understand the buyer, decide what matters, and measure whether it moved.

How to start

A discovery call, usually half an hour. We talk about the business, what has been tried, and what is getting in the way. If I am the right person to help I will tell you what I would do first and what it would cost. If I am not, I will say so and point you at what would work better.

The short version

Senior marketing support does not have to mean a full-time hire or a monthly retainer. For most Essex SMEs, a defined piece of work or a few days a month is enough to get the plan right and keep it honest.
